Where does IJBOL come from?

IJBOL has been in use online since at least the late 2000s, but in recent years it has gained slightly more traction (when compared to similar expressions like LOL and LMAO) thanks to K-pop fandom.

Some of the earliest recent conversations online about ijbol are out-of-the-loop K-Pop fans wondering what it means. In March 2022 someone tweeted “idk what ijbol means and at this point I’m too afraid to ask.”

How is IJBOL used?

IJBOL is not going to threaten LOL or LMAO hegemony anytime soon, and confusion is often expressed online about what it stands for (do not confuse IJBOL with spagbol, a term used in British English for spaghetti with Bolognese sauce), but it’s a handy alternative that can be used in similar contexts.
